Laser Hair Removal: Removing Unwanted Hair for Good

Our medical staff are highly trained in advanced techniques. Laser hair removal is a safe, gentle, and FDA-approved way to remove hair. There is no downtime, and generally, every area of the body can be treated. The laser produces a beam of light, which is selectively absorbed by the hair follicles, preventing the surrounding tissue from getting damaged. The heat destroys the hair and damages the follicle for re-growth. Hair follicles grow in phases. Laser hair removal targets those hairs in the active phase of growth. Treatments must be repeated for optimal results depending on the individual and the body area being treated. We can treat all skin colors using one of the safest, most effective lasers for hair removal.

Laser Hair Removal Preparation

Laser hair removal requires specific preliminary steps to ensure optimum results leading up to your appointment:

  • We need your lightest natural skin color in the treatment area, free of tans and burns, including sunless tanning/spray tans. The treatment area must be out of the sun for at least one week post-treatment.
  • Stop all use of Accutane for six months.
  • Stop all waxing, tweezing, hair removal creams, and epilator usage two weeks before treatment.
  • Stop all exfoliant usage, including Retinol and Retin A, two weeks before treatment.
  • Postpone treatment if taking light-sensitive antibiotics, such as doxycycline, minocycline, or tetracycline, until two weeks after stopping the antibiotic.
  • If you would like to use an anesthetic cream to minimize discomfort in the area, email us at [email protected] with your name and date of birth after you make your appointment.
  • Take Valtrex if you have a known history of cold sores in the treatment area.

Day of Treatment Preparation

  • Shave entirely on the day of treatment. There should be no surface hair unless otherwise instructed. There is a charge for shaving.
  • If using an anesthetic cream, apply it to the treatment area 90 minutes prior. You can wrap the treatment area with saran wrap to keep the cream on the treatment area.

Am I a Good Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?

Only Fitzpatrick skin types 1-4 can be treated at our office, and only pigmented hair can be treated. Blonde, red, gray, and white hairs cannot be effectively treated with laser therapy. People who are pregnant are not candidates for treatment.

Does It Hurt?

At its worst, patients describe the pain level as similar to the feeling of a rubber band snapping. We use a few methods to minimize discomfort to ensure a relaxing experience. Our lasers have a specialized cooling device built in, making the procedure much more comfortable. We also offer topical anesthetic, which should be applied 90 minutes before treatment, to aid discomfort.

Is Laser Hair Removal Safe?

Yes, if done under the guidance of a trained physician with the proper equipment. The laser beam targets only the hair follicle, sparing the remainder of the skin. This selective technology allows for a high level of safety in this procedure. Patients continue with their daily activities after treatment, though skin can be slightly red immediately after.

Why Do Laser Hair Removal Over Other Hair Removal Techniques?

Lasers can remove hundreds of hairs in less than a second. Electrolysis treats one hair at a time, and all other techniques, such as waxing, shaving, or depilatory creams are only temporary. Laser hair removal is a fast and safe solution for unwanted hair.

How Many Treatments Are Needed?

The number of treatments varies with the body area and hair type being treated. Hair has several phases in its life cycle. The laser beam only disables those hairs that are in the active phase of growth. Only a certain percentage of your hair is in the active phase at any given time. Therefore, treatments must be repeated at varying time intervals for optimal results.
